So there’s this thing called Melody Mayhem that happens every now and then in a Discord group I’m part of: Become a Pro Composer. A member posts a prompt (an image, a video, some words) and everyone writes something inspired by it.
This time the prompt was a video. Camera moving slowly, infinitely into what looks like a glowing green data tunnel. Very Matrix. Very cyberpunk. And the second I saw it, I knew exactly the vibe I wanted.
The thing is, I’ve always loved cyberpunk music but never actually tried to write it. It just felt like this thing other people did. So I never went there.
This prompt kind of forced my hand.
I wanted something heroic and stoic at the same time. Melancholy but not defeated. Action with weight. And unresolved, like you’re still inside the tunnel, still moving, and you have no idea what’s at the other end.
I’ve written plenty of orchestral/electronic hybrid stuff, but always on the more traditional or ambient side. This was different. Hard-hitting beat, cyberpunk electronica, orchestra on top. First time I’ve put those things together like this.
Honestly, I’m fairly happy with how it turned out. And more than anything, it reminded me that sometimes you just need a prompt to push you somewhere new.
